BLOG - January 2012
I hope that anyone that has paid the new-look seafront a visit in the last couple of months will agree that it is a wonderful place to enjoy.
The Made by the Sea pop-up winter fair was a huge success, and although its doors closed on 24 December 2011 at the end of a fantastic season of trading, you can find details on the project and businesses involved on the website: www.madebythesea.co.uk. Rother District Council's Regeneration and Estates team is currently working with those who registered an interest to take on the extended and refurbished Colonnade as a restaurant / retail space. In addition, the kiosks adjoined to the east and west of the main Grade II listed building will be leased out - anyone interested in a kiosk should contact our Estates office on 01424 787870. Some of you may have noticed that a small section above the water feature is fenced off. Unfortunately some subsidence has occurred in this isolated area. With such a large scheme some issues will inevitably come to light, but the snagging period means they can be fixed early on. Some localised subsidence after major earthworks isn't uncommon and to have happened whilst our contractors are still on site is much better than at any point in the future. Work is currently under way to investigate the cause, take remedial action and carry out repairs. The pathway that leads from the water feature, up across the top of the Colonnade and towards the top of the Rowing Club, has been closed to allow the contractors full access to carry out their work. The path running parallel to this, nearest to the rear of De La Warr Pavilion provides access along this route and all other footpaths and the promenade remain fully open, so there will be minimal disruption. The feedback I have received from people who have visited Bexhill seafront over the winter months has been really positive. Looking to the future (and hopefully some wonderful spring and summer weather!) I can envisage that the west promenade garden room, the Metropole Lawns and the Colonnade will become a popular destination for both local people and holidaymakers alike. Best Wishes, Janice Windle
