Next Wave News - May 2011
Next Wave took a huge symbolic step forward on April 15 and May 5 with the arrival of its new shelters. The structures, situated on the West Parade section of the seafront, were selected through a Royal Institute of British Architecture (RIBA) organised competition.
Following public feedback to Rother District Council, the design of the seafront shelters has been subtly amended to provide increased protection from the elements and comfortable wooden benches with backs. The predominantly timber design sit alongside rejuvenated gardens, landscaping and new seating. The project also includes updated signage and a resurfacing of the promenade. The shelters provide users with the option of facing the sea or sitting in different directions depending on the weather conditions. The architecturally striking shelters, which are unique to Bexhill, were fabricated off site and arrived in spectacular fashion on low loaders, requiring a temporary road closure while they were being craned on site.
