December 2010
Well, summer and autumn 2010 have seen a dramatic change in Bexhill's seafront, with some very dramatic weather thrown at us, too! Contract A, the re-landscaping of the promenade on West Parade from the kiosk to the public conveniences adjacent to Richmond Road is nearing completion. Although this was scheduled to be open for the end of November, gale-force winds and torrential rain last month and the more recent snow 'showers' inevitably delayed the finishing touches. However, it is looking fantastic and since the planting has taken place and the turfs have been laid to create the 'garden rooms', the vision is fast becoming a reality. Temporary fencing has been put in place to protect the lawn and shrubs until they mature, but please rest assured, this fencing does not form part of the final scheme and will be removed once the planting has become established.
The promenade 'furniture' is in place – from benches and play equipment to signage and litter bins for various uses – you really can start to see how this area will be enjoyed by the widest variety of seafront users. The shelters, currently under construction by Millimetre Ltd., are being created off-site and once ready will be brought in and fixed in place. We aim to have these installed throughout February / March 2011. Neilcott Construction Ltd., carrying out Contract B, arrived on site in October and has made an impact by starting with the demolition of the Rowing Club and excavating behind the King George V Colonnade. This is the first step into transforming this area into a fantastic place to enjoy what Bexhill's seafront has to offer. I'm really looking forward to the imminent opening of the promenade and the arrival of the shelters as it will allow residents and visitors to enjoy the seaside in a new and exciting environment that offers a significant taste of things to come.
