Shelters
Four new shelters will be produced for the West Promenade to replace the late 1970's faux Victorian shelters. A design competition was held at the end of 2009, organised by RIBA, The Royal Institute of British Architects. The architects have over the past months being progressing through these stages whilst incorporating feedback and comments into the process from not only the project team, but the public (through the original competition consultation and the exhibition at the De La Warr Pavilion), a number of design workshops and the steering group. This, along with cost considerations and procurement have resulted in a final design which will give Bexhill the shelters the new seafront deserves. | The feedback has resulted in some key changes being made to the shelters design and functionality, they include: · Increased protection from the wind and rain. · A predominantly wooden structure replacing stainless steel. · Comfortable, wooden benches with seats and backs. |
The designs will be manufactured and constructed by Millimetre Design. Pre construction of the shelter bases will be carried out by Neilcott as part of Contract A. The current programme allows for completion of the shelters early in 2011. A new kiosk will not be delivered as part of this project but refurbished for completion in February 2011. You can view details of the original competition submission here.
