The refurbishment of the Grade II listed Colonnade and the provision of a new Rowing Club building. The Colonnade The King George V Colonnade opened in 1911 is a Grade II listed structure and is a prominent landmark on Bexhill's seafront. The structure will be renovated to the highest standards and converted into an enclosed space that can house a restaurant and or a café. We have carried out extensive historical surveys of the structure and consulted widely with English Heritage and local history experts. the resulting design proposals are both sensitive to the past, respecting the heritage of the structure and will ensure a long and successful future for the landmark building. | - Awnings above Colonnade to provide shade - Existing Colonnade structure - fully refurbished as a listed building - New seating area to the Colonnade roof - Coastal officer's office reprovided in the Colonnade - Colonnade enclosed with simple glass screens - Space for outdoor tables and chairs |
The refurbished Colonnade structure will provide the opportunity for a much improved food and drink outlet. The new restaurant or café space will have both indoor and outdoor dining areas. Inside the existing Colonnade new glass walls with opening doors along the line of existing columns will enclose the new space. This will allow a fantastic view of the seafront and all it's attractions. Outside in the colonnade circle the area will be levelled off to provide an improved dining area creating a unique destination for the people of and visitors to Bexhill
The Rowing ClubA new dedicated set-up and wash down area outside the club house on the promenade will be provided. To allow improved pedestrian connections from the De La Warr terrace to the promenade a new set of "civic" steps will be constructed directly to the east of the new rowing club. The new steps will be generous in proportion with a wide, open flight, generous "goings" on the steps, low risers and regular landings. Handrails will be incorporated into the design to maximise ambulant use for the majority of users. | - Promenade repaired and resurfaced - Rowing club setup and wash down area - New Rowing Club building with improved facilities and storage area. - Viewing area to roof of new Rowing Club - New "civic" stairs linking Upper Terrace with the promenade |
The Metropole LawnWide grass terraces will create generous flat open spaces for use in a multitude of different ways; a place to walk with your family, share a picnic with friends, visit an outdoor art exhibition or local fair, attend a tai chi class, fly a kite or just sit and watch the rest of the world go by with the sun on your face. | - Terrace walls to edge of lawn - Comfortable timber benches with arms and back rest attached to terrace walls - New path connecting West Parade with Upper Terrace and Marina Court Avenue - Series of generous grass terraces - New path connecting Sackville Road to Promenade - New planting to the edge of Pavilion service areas |

The terraces will double as places to sit, either on the wall itself or on timber benches that will be fixed to the terrace walls. Views from the lawn towards the sea will be maintained and improved throughout. | - New planting to the base of the De La Warr Pavilion - Wide path connecting to upper terrace and Marina Court Avenue - Informal seating on low walls - Steps provided for easy access to grass terraces - Low walls used to create flat terraces - New path connecting to West Parade |
