The West Promenade Garden Rooms

The design for the seafront west of the pavilion maintains the exciting arrangement of a broad open promenade. Garden "rooms" which are spaces with defined areas of activity and layout will form the most striking elements of the new promenade.

The promenade use primarily for walking up and down; enjoyment of the fresh air, panoramic views, the opportunity for exercise and access to the beach. To the rear of the promenade, the existing grass and paved areas will be developed to provide a varied range of "outdoor rooms". These areas will accommodate a range of uses and activities from small play areas for young children to sheltered gardens, open lawn areas as well as outdoor "gyms".

- Long low walls to shelter planting.

- New bio-diverse flowering plantation planting in long drifts

- Special benches with improved comfort for elderly users

- Existing lighting to West Parade retained

- New signage along promenade

- Existing railing retained

- Promenade repaired and resurfaced

- Textured surface to prevent skating near benches

Improved drop off areas for packing and unpacking cars for a day at the beach or at sea will allow visitors improved access (including wheelchairs) to the promenade. We will re-provide comfortable timber benches along the length of the promenade and new shelters that will be designed to fit in along the seafront and provide proper shelter from the elements. The entire length of the promenade will be set out with a mix of native and ornamental planting similar to what you may find in more natural areas of the south coast, or even in Derek Jarman's cottage garden. The planting will be sheltered from the wind by new low walls and the new benches.
