August 2009

Another month flies by, but I really feel that much has been achieved in such a short space of time.

By the time you read this our design team led by HTA will have presented their design proposals for the Metropole Lawn, West Promenade, the Rowing Club and the Colonnade to the Steering Group and we can then look at the fine detail of these proposals, such as the new benches and the materials to be used throughout. The design team will also need to knit their work closely into that of other organisations and we have been liaising closely with English Heritage and East Sussex Highways to ensure that the designs have the right elements in place.

The underlying concept of these designs has always been that the seafront is a 'pleasure to promenade along', meeting as many of the needs as possible to make it an attractive and delightful experience for all users. Of course, this will be challenging task and I believe the appointed architects are meeting that challenge in a very positive way by having heard all the concerns, comments and contributions made so far, and understanding what will make the seafront that little bit special.

At this point I'd like to update you on the memorial benches situated on the De La Warr and West Parades. We have spent the last few months collating all the records and information we have for people who donated benches and memorials in the area affected by the scheme, we have written to all the donors at the address we have on file. However some of these donations were made over 15 years ago and naturally some may have moved away. If you have donated a memorial bench in this area please contact us by 4th September so that we are able to communicate how these benches will be affected by the scheme over the coming months.

Another picture from the archives. This months depicts the motor show or "concourse d'elegance" held on the De La Warr terrace in 1934.

Alison Turnbull has been appointed by the design team as the project artist. Alison has a strong and exciting body of work and we should see her unique influence on certain aspects of the project as designs near completion.

The last six months on this project have been equally enjoyable and challenging, but there is little that can beat an opportunity to get the colouring books and pens out! Last Monday (17th) I joined a Sure start programme in Egerton Park. The families and children in attendance participated in a colouring competition, a place for the winner at the ground breaking ceremony for the start of the project works was up for grabs and the entries I had were so impressive. My thanks to all who put so much effort in on the day. I'll announce the winner here soon....

My thanks also must go to the Make It Box who at such short notice managed to provide us with materials and pens for the competition. I know how much they went out of their way to get these to me on time. It was greatly appreciated.
